In the construction industry, an instrument fitter is synonymous with a pipe fitter. A pipe fitter installs and repairs pipe systems used to house the electrical and heating and cooling structures within buildings. Instrument fitters also install the controls (e.g., thermostats) that regulate these utilities.
Prior to beginning a project, an instrument fitter must thoroughly read and comprehend a blueprint in order to understand how to perform the installation.
Cutting and Bending Pipes
Using special machinery, instrument fitters cut pipes based on the specifications on a blueprint. They then bend the pipes manually, to fit the layout.
Using a variety methods, such as caulking, gluing and welding, an instrument fitter connects pipes so that they do not easily separate.
Instrument fitters are responsible for acquiring and maintaining an arsenal of tools, including chisels, hammers and wrenches. These tools are necessary to complete every project.
